Deferrisation and Demanganisation Systems

Contaminated groundwater often contains dissolved substances of natural origin which fall out as solids in recovery plants and massively disturb the operation.

Such substances are usually iron, mangane and carbonate.

If the purified groundwater, for instance, is to seep away, these extraneous materials negatively affect the infiltration device or make it useless after a short time.

In these cases the water has to be treated before it reaches the recovery system or infiltration device.

Through the addition of oxygen (in the form of air or appropriate oxidants), the dissolved extraneous material is precipitated in our plants and subsequently removed.

Depending on the specific requirements, our plants are equipped with a fully automatic back-flushing unit. This device ensures the regular restoration of the filters’ purification performance and a long life of the filling of the filters.

Absorption and Other Side Effects

During the process of flocculation, new macromolecules with a large inner surface are produced. These flocs often adsorb organic contaminants, which can be disposed of with the sludge.

After a certain time of operation and under favourable conditions, microflora can develop in the deferrisation system and considerably reduce the content of organic contaminants. The microorganisms use the contaminants for their metabolism and thus decompose them to harmless end products.

Both these effects can support downstream recovery stages to a high degree.
